St George's Day

Project status: Current

To develop a community-led, partnership event in the town centre to celebrate the multi-cultural England that Swindon represents so well.

Project Overview

Demographically, Swindon is a microcosm of the rest of the country, often used as a test bed for projects that are then rolled out Nationally. As such, Swindon is a perfect model of everything that is best about Englishness. This project, building on the St. George’s Day events that already happen in the town, is focused on the delivery of a large scale town centre parade and series of events in Wharf Green in association with inSwindon and SBC. The key to the event, and the thing that will make Swindon’s offer stand out, will be to celebrate the different cultures that make up Swindon and England today.

The event is now approaching its fourth year and, with bands, community groups, scouts, dancers, soldiers, food stalls and a myriad of other activity, is fast becoming one of the biggest regular Town Centre events.

Swindon Magnets

This project is one of our Swindon ‘Magnets’, being developed in support of One Swindon’s aim to establish a solid events programme for the Borough. The idea is to develop a number of cultural projects with a view to them becoming, over time, iconic elements of the Swindon calendar in the same way as the Festival of Literature, The Mela and the Half-Marathon have become.

Our Swindon Magnets are founded in the passions of local people and centre around a policy to give local people the professional support they need in order to create and develop self-sustaining cultural projects. The support that Forward Swindon brings to the projects (in different quantities depending on the project)  includes advice and help with organisation, working with the Council, marketing, PR, print and publicity, advertising, sponsorship, volunteer assistance, grant applications, partnership building and professional project management.
