The water feature at Canal Walk includes two Water Walls constructed of bonded and bolted stainless steel. One wall is 2600mm long and one 1000mm long, both are 2800mm high with a thickness of approximately 150mm. A weir of water comes from a letterbox slot along the top of the long surfaces. Water travels down the sculpture; clinging and falling from the surfaces randomly while also gathering and in some areas and leaving others dry. The sculpture is based on a square piece of textile which is crumpled. The stepped edge occurs when this square is pulled back on its self and then the piece sliced up. The stack of pieces presents laser cut edges to give a desired shiny texture, with a sense of craft similar to a band saw cut.
This has a much stronger more solid feel to existing mirror polish plate water walls, which show up every distortion and scratch in the material. Lighting has been be designed by Arup in consultation with the artists and factor in safety/visibility issues.
