Coming into the centre of Swindon from Junction 16 of the M4, most drivers pass through the Whalebridge roundabout site, which has been identified for substantial redevelopment as part of the Union Square scheme. The design removes the roundabout and pedestrian subways completely, replacing them with a signalised junction, including excellent new pedestrianised areas using high quality materials. A design focused, rather than traffic led solution, the Whalebridge project will enhance access into Union Square and Jurys Inn Hotel, making another significant improvement to the public spaces of central Swindon.
Other important parts of the project are the all directions signalized junction at Gordon Road, the removal of the metal barriers in the centre of Princes Street and the repair of the pavement on the western side of Princes Street up to the Magistrates Court.
The funding of the £4.25 million scheme was provided by the HCA and SWRDA and Forward Swindon was able to put the necessary legal agreements in place in less than six months. Muse Developments Limited have engaged Aggregate Industries UK t/a Bardon who will, over the months ahead, turn the plans into reality. The project will complete in December 2011.
