Muse Developments and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) have submitted a detailed planning application to Swindon Borough Council for the first phase of regeneration at Union Square.
The application seeks approval for one residential building comprising 45 assisted living apartments, and a high quality 850 space multi-storey car park. This is following the outline planning application that was approved for the entire Union Square regeneration on, 8th November.
Doug Finlay development director at Muse said: “This detailed planning application for the first phase of development is a significant milestone for the project and a pre-curser to a start on site in the spring of next year.”
Peter Jones, HCA head of area, added: “Union Square is an important project for us, as it aims to bring huge benefits to Swindon in the shape of housing, shops and offices. These in turn will bring new jobs, opportunities and better transport services.
“We have supported this project with significant investment and it is good to see that it has reached this stage. There is still a great deal to do, but we are committed to working with partners to support this exciting and important scheme for Swindon.”
Garry Perkins, cabinet member for economic development, regeneration, art and culture said “This is great news and a sign that things are really moving forward. These things take time but this will be one of the biggest building projects in the South outside of the Olympics, and it will be here in Swindon.”
Chris Hitchings development director at Forward Swindon commented: “This application is the culmination of a great deal of work involving the landowner, Muse and their design team in producing a scheme which Forward Swindon hope will really excite the people of Swindon.” He continued, commenting on the design, “For example, the use of terracotta fins on the car park is a feature which is rarely seen in the UK, and the attention to detail by the architects will give Union Square the design start it needs”.
