Swindon is a popular place to work. Employees and staff at all levels of skill and seniority commute into Swindon from the surrounding towns, villages and areas.

Swindon has a sizeable workforce some 121,000 people, comprising 64,000 men and 57,000 women and of those an estimated 10,200 people (8.3%) are self-employed.

The knowledge-based economy in Swindon is strong compared with the national picture, in addition to high-tech and medium-high-tech employment being well above the national average. Swindon also has a high proportion of employees in the top two growth sectors, namely Retail Distribution and Business Services, in comparison to the UK.

Some 82% of the economically active population in Swindon live and work in the Borough. Workers travel into the town from North & West Wiltshire
