Richard Jefferies Museum

Leading the way to an historic landmark

Situated at Coate Water Country Park, the Richard Jefferies Museum (also known as the 'Old House at Coate') is the birthplace of notable Victorian author and naturalist, Richard Jefferies. Squeezed between a busy dual-carriageway and a meadow, it wasn't easy for the park's visitors to find and access the house. That was until a project led by Forward Swindon opened a new pathway in August 2011, which runs directly from the park to the farmhouse.

Enhancing Swindon's cultural heritage

  • The pathway is a significant first step in promoting the Richard Jefferies Museum and enhancing the experience for the 500,000 people that visit Coate Water Country Park every year.
  • The project will improve the museum, upgrading the operation, signage, marketing and displays within the building.
