Great Western Underpass

Creating accessible routes for everyone

The Great Western Underpass is one of the few pedestrian links between the north and south sides ofSwindon. Running fromLondon StreetandBristol Streetthrough to the Swindon Designer Outlet, the tunnel was once uninviting and underused. That’s all changed, thanks to Forward Swindon’s regeneration project. The result is a welcoming and accessible route that makes short journeys more pleasant for visitors, workers and shoppers alike.

Taking the underpass to the next level

  • The new underpass improves access for shoppers travelling between the Swindon Designer Outlet and Swindon’s town centre; unites the centre with rich heritage areas, including the National Trust headquarters, STEAM Museum and the National Monuments Record Centre; and enhances journeys for visitors arriving by train, and employees walking to work.
  • The tunnel features ten artworks by Bruce Williams, depicting railway workers through history. The artwork reflects the historic achievements of Swindon’s railway industry.
  • The many improvements to the tunnel include a comprehensive clean-up andimproved lighting.
