Swindon Borough Local Plan 2026 approved

The vital planning blueprint that will guide the way Swindon grows in the years up to 2026 has been formally adopted by the council. The Local Plan, outlines where new houses and employment sites should be located, what infrastructure is required to support it, and helps protect land from potentially unwelcome speculative planning applications from developers.

It includes the proposals for the Eastern Villages and expansion at South Marston, makes assessments about future growth in the Borough, and demonstrates how infrastructure such as transport in the area will work.

Swindon Borough Council’s previous Local Plan was adopted in 2006 but has become increasingly out of date, leaving gaps through which developers could gain planning permission in areas where the council would not have encouraged it. The replacement Local Plan has been through several drafts and rounds of public consultation, and has had to adapt to changing national planning policy and guidance.
