Visiting Swindon

2865

Swindon has its origin as a small market town, used mainly for barter trade until mid- 1800’s. The original Swindon is now known as Old Town. Its quiet courtyards and alleyways have a vibrant mix of traditional shops and pub, fashion shops, stylish cafes, bars and restaurants. Two of the most attractive and well loved places in Swindon are in the Old Town Gardens and Queens Park.

The Old Town Gardens retain the feel of their original Victorian splendour, where visitors can stroll and relax. During the summer months the area comes alive with the sound of music from the many open air concerts and festivals such as the Swindon Mela.

Swindon is a remarkably green place with some beautiful country parks such as Lydiard Park – set in historic parkland on the western edge of Swindon. Its Palladian house, restored 18th Century Walled Garden, 260 acre parkland and children’s play area offer something for everyone, all year round. Swindon has several other country parks to enjoy – please see the Visit Swindon website for details.

Other places to visit include STEAM – the museum of the Great Western Railway – a fascinating journey through the life and times of the GWR for all the family to enjoy.

The Swindon Museum and Art Gallery is worth a visit, it houses one of the country’s finest small collections of modern British art.
